Region losing battle to dangerous plantHogweed.jpg
june 20th, 2011

Please read the article in the Record for information on the battle against Hogweed, an invasive and dangerous plant cropping up across our Region. Our region has prime locations for this plant to grow as it prefers moist soil and areas along rivers and streams. This plant is caustic and will burn skin if touched and if it gets in your eyes can cause permanent damage. The Region is working on a plan to remove these plants but for now be wary of these plants. The plant can grow up to 4 metres tall, is very hairy, has purple blotchy stems, and wide leaves with a cluster of white flowers at the top. For more information on the plant, pamphlets are available at the Township Office. If you spot any of these plants please do not touch it or attempt disposal rather contact your Local Municipal Weed Inspector at (519) 575-4016 or by email at lrs@region.waterloo.on.ca.
