FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FREEZING RAIN WARNING / MIXED PRECIPITATION WINTER STORM
EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN DRIVING AND WALKING
Environment Canada has issued a Freezing Rain Warning for North Dumfries and the surrounding area. The winter storm is forecast to start late this afternoon and extending through the overnight period to early Thursday morning.
It is anticipated that light snow, which will be heavy at times, will mix with ice pellets late this afternoon. A total amount of accumulation of 5 to 10 cm is anticipated. The snow and ice pellets will mix or change over to freezing rain this evening. A prolonged period of freezing rain is possible continuing into the overnight period tapering off early Thursday morning to patchy freezing drizzle. Ice accretion of 5 to 10 millimetres is possible. Northeasterly winds gusting to 50 km / hr. will diminish Thursday morning.
Extensive utility outages are possible due to the combination of ice accretion and moderate winds.
Another light wintry mix of precipitation is possible Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening.
Please use extreme caution if you are outside and moving about through the community, either by vehicle or walking. Surfaces such as roads, walkways & sidewalks and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous. Residents are encouraged to limit travel Wednesday evening and through the overnight period.
There remains the potential for ice accretion build up on tree limbs and aerial hydro lines. If you come across downed hydro lines – stay away and do not get closer than the length of a school bus (33 ft / 10 m) and call 911. If tree limbs are down on the travelled portion of the road, please call the Township Municipal Office at (519) 632-8800 or after hours (after 4:30 pm) at (519) 575-4400 and crews will be dispatched to deal with the situation.
The Township is requesting the assistance of residents to not park their vehicles on the roads Wednesday afternoon and extending through to Thursday morning so as to assist crews from the Public Works Department during their plowing & sanding / salting operations.
If you encounter a power outage, please contact GrandBridge Energy at 1-833-769-3701 Power outage information is also available on-line at the GrandBridge website www.energyplus.ca
