Regulations in the Township’s Zoning By-law were updated on Secondary Dwelling Units, Coach Houses (accessory apartments), and Garden Suites.
Secondary Dwelling Unit (within Principal Dwelling)
Zoning Regulations on Secondary Dwelling Units
A secondary dwelling unit is a separate permanent self-contained second unit which is subordinate in size and located in the same building as the principal dwelling unit of a single detached, link-detached, semi-detached, or townhouse dwelling. Its creation does not result in the creation of a semi-detached dwelling or duplex dwelling.
Coach Houses (Accessory Unit)
Zoning Regulations on Coach Houses
Coach Houses means a separate permanent self-contained second dwelling unit that is separate, subordinate in size and accessory to the principal dwelling unit. The unit may be a free-standing structure attached to or above a detached garage or other accessory structure.
Garden Suites
Zoning Regulations on Garden Suites
A Garden Suite means a detached residential structure containing bathroom and kitchen facilities that is ancillary to an existing residential structure and that is designed to be portable.
Garden Suites are not permitted as of right within any zone. If you would like a garden suite you must apply for an amendment to the Zoning By-law for a temporary use.
New proposals to create a second unit require a building permit. Where existing second units were created without a permit, the current owner is required to obtain a permit to ensure important building and fire code standards are met.
