Information for Voters

The 2026 Municipal and School Board Election is on Monday, October 26, 2026. Eligible voters will be able to vote using internet or paper ballots.

Every four years, in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, the Clerk, acting as Returning Officer, conducts elections for the offices of:

  • Mayor (elect one (1) at large)
  • Councillors (elect one (1) from each of the four (4) wards)
  • Regional Chair (elect one (1) at large) 
  • School Trustees for:
    • Waterloo Region District School Board (elect three (3))
    • Waterloo Catholic District School Board (elect three 3))
    • Conseil Scolaire Viamonde (French Public School Board) (elect one (1))
    • Conseil Scolaire Catholique Monavenir (French Catholic School Board) (elect one (1))

To qualify as an eligible elector to vote in the 2026 Municipal Election, you must:

  • be a Canadian citizen
  • be at least 18 years old
  • reside in the Township of North Dumfries, be the owner or tenant of land in the Township of North Dumfries, or the spouse of such a person
  • not be prohibited from voting under any law

Regardless of how many properties you own or rent within the Township, you may only vote once.

The following list indicates those who are prohibited from voting under Section 17 (3) of the Municipal Elections Act

  • A person serving a sentence in a penal or correctional institution
  • A corporation
  • An executor or trustee
  • Any person convicted of an offence under subsection 90 (3) of the Municipal Elections Act

Eligible voters have two options to vote in the 2026 Municipal Election. 

Option 1: Internet Voting

If you voted in a Provincial or Federal Election, it does not guarantee that you are on the Voters' List for a Municipal Election.  

Elections Ontario manages a single register of electors for both provincial and municipal elections in Ontario. You can check to see if your name is on the voters' list or manage your information through the voter registration service. You can also update or manage school support through the MAPC school support tool.

Are you 16 or 17 years old and interested in voting? If you are 16 or 17 years old, a Canadian citizen, and a resident of Ontario, you can add your name to the Register of Future Voters.

To be able to add your name to the Voters' List, closer to the date of the Municipal Election you will need to show staff one of the following pieces of ID in original, certified, or notarial copy format that shows the person's name and qualifying address.

  1. Ontario Driver's Licence
  2. Ontario Health Card (with photo)
  3. Ontario Photo Card
  4. Ontario motor vehicle permit (vehicle portion)
  5. Voided personalized cheque
  6. Mortgage statement, leaser or rental agreement relating to property in Ontario
  7. Insurance policy or insurance statement
  8. Loan agreement or other financial agreement with a financial institution
  9. Document issued or certified by a court in Ontario
  10. Any other document from the government of Canada, Ontario or a municipality in Ontario or from an agency of such a government
  11. Any document from a Band Council in Ontario established under the Indian Act (Canada)
  12. Income Tax Assessment Notice
  13. Child Tax Benefit Statement
  14. Statement of Employment Insurance Benefits Paid T4E
  15. Statement of Old Age Security T4A (OAS)
  16. Statement of Canada Pension Plan Benefits T4A (P)
  17. Canada Pension Plan Statement of Contributions
  18. Statement of Direct Deposit for Ontario Work.
  19. Statement of Direct Deposit for Ontario Disability Support Program
  20. Workplace Safety and Insurance Board Statement of Benefits T5007
  21. Property tax assessment
  22. Credit card statement, bank account statement, or RRSP, RRIF, RHOSP or T5 statement
  23. CNIB Card or a card from another registered charitable organization that provides services to persons with disabilities
  24. Hospital card or record
  25. Document showing campus residence, issued by the office or officials responsible for student residence at a pot-secondary institution
  26. Document showing residence at a long-term care home under the Long-Term Care Homes Act, 2007, issued by the Administrator for the home
  27. Utility bill for hydro, water, gas, telephone or cable TV or a bill from a public utilities commission
  28. Cheque stub, T4 statement or pay receipt issued by an employer
  29. Transcript or report card from a post-secondary school

Why was I asked to endorse a candidate to run for office?

All candidates are required to collect 25 signatures on the Endorsement of Nomination (Form 2) prior to submitting their candidacy for office in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act. Candidates running for Ward Councillor, Mayor, and Regional Chair must collect these signatures. Any eligible voter in the Township of North Dumfries may endorse a candidate. 

How do I change my school support?

In accordance with Section 16(4) of the Assessment Act, the default school support and school board election is English Public unless the owner or tenant of a property advises the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) otherwise. Regardless of the school your children attend, you will be automatically registered to vote in the English Public school board. Those who wish to change their default school board election should contact MPAC. Residents and property owners must meet the following criteria to change their school board election:

  • To vote in a separate school board trustee election (Waterloo Catholic District School Board or Conseil Scolaire MonAvenir), the property owner or tenant must be Roman Catholic. 
  • To vote in a French language school board trustee election (Conseil Scolaire Viamonde or Conseil Scolaire MonAvenir, the property owner or tenant must be a French language rights holder. 

Am I eligible to vote in every municipality in which I own property?

If you own property in the Township of North Dumfries but live in another municipality you can vote in as a non-resident voter in the Township of North Dumfries. If you own property in the Township of North Dumfries and another municipality in the Region of Waterloo, you are only eligible to vote for Regional Chair once. You must abstain from voting for Regional Chair on your second ballot. You also must abstain from voting in the school board election. If you own property in the Township of North Dumfries and another municipality not in the Region of Waterloo, you are eligible to vote for Regional Chair. Non-resident owners and tenants of commercial/ industrial properties are not eligible to vote for School Board Trustee.

Can I vote twice if I own two properties in the Township of North Dumfries but they are in different wards?

Eligible voters are only allowed to vote once in the Ward Councillor race. You will be registered to vote in the Ward in which you reside.

Who do I contact if an election sign was placed on my property without my permission?

Permission from the property owner or tenant must be granted before a candidate can place an election sign on private property. If you have a concern regarding a election sign on your property, please submit a by-law compliant form and return it to our office in person or by email.
